Company intelligence / Profile preview
Athenex was a global biopharmaceutical company dedicated to the discovery, development, and commercialization of novel therapies for the treatment of cancer. The company's proprietary Orascovery platform utilized the P-glycoprotein inhibitor encequidar to enable the oral administration of traditionally intravenous cytotoxic agents, such as paclitaxel and irinotecan. Additionally, Athenex developed a specialized NKT cell therapy platform through its acquisition of Kuur Therapeutics, targeting various hematologic and solid tumors. While the company successfully brought Klisyri (tirbanibulin) to market for actinic keratosis, it faced significant regulatory hurdles with its lead oncology candidate, oral paclitaxel. Following a Complete Response Letter from the FDA and mounting financial pressures, Athenex filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in May 2023. The ATS Liquidating Trust was subsequently established to manage the wind-down of operations and the distribution of remaining assets to stakeholders.
