Company intelligence / Profile preview
Aventis was a prominent global pharmaceutical company formed in 1999 through the merger of Germany's Hoechst AG and France's Rhône-Poulenc. Headquartered in Strasbourg, France, the company was a leader in several therapeutic areas, including oncology, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Its portfolio featured blockbuster drugs such as the long-acting insulin Lantus, the chemotherapy agent Taxotere, and the anticoagulant Lovenox. In 2004, Aventis was acquired by Sanofi-Synthélabo in a landmark $65 billion hostile takeover, leading to the creation of Sanofi-Aventis, which eventually rebranded as Sanofi. At the time of its acquisition, it was one of the world's largest pharmaceutical entities with a robust R&D pipeline and a significant global manufacturing footprint.
