Company intelligence / Profile preview
Avicon, Inc. was a pioneering medical technology and biotechnology company established in 1970 as a joint venture between Alcon Laboratories and FMC Corporation. Headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas, the company specialized in the development and commercialization of microfibrillar collagen hemostatic (MCH) agents derived from bovine sources. Its flagship product, Avitene, was approved by the FDA in 1976 and became a gold standard for adjunctive hemostasis in surgical procedures where conventional methods like ligatures or pressure were ineffective. The company's technology played a critical role in advancing surgical care by providing an effective means of controlling bleeding in cardiovascular, neurosurgical, and orthopedic operations. Avicon's assets were eventually acquired by C.R. Bard (now a part of Becton Dickinson), which continues to market the Avitene product line today.
