Company intelligence / Profile preview
Avitech Diagnostics, Inc. was a pioneering molecular diagnostics company focused on the development of genotypic resistance testing for infectious diseases. The company is best known for developing the GenoSure HIV-1 resistance test, which became a standard of care for managing antiretroviral therapy in HIV patients. Founded in 1994 and headquartered in Malvern, Pennsylvania, Avitech utilized PCR and DNA sequencing technologies to identify viral mutations that confer drug resistance. In 2001, the company was acquired by Specialty Laboratories for approximately $24 million, and its technology was subsequently integrated into Quest Diagnostics following Quest's acquisition of Specialty Laboratories in 2005. Avitech's contributions were instrumental in the early adoption of personalized medicine and pharmacogenomics in the treatment of viral infections.
