Company intelligence / Profile preview
Axial Biotech was a molecular diagnostics company that specialized in the development of genetic tests for spinal disorders, most notably Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS). The company's flagship product, ScoliScore, was the first clinically validated DNA-based prognostic test designed to predict the likelihood of spinal curve progression in affected patients. By analyzing 53 genetic markers, the test provided a personalized risk score that helped clinicians determine which patients were at low risk for severe progression, potentially sparing them from unnecessary bracing and frequent X-ray exposure. Founded as a spin-out from the University of Utah, Axial Biotech established a significant commercial partnership with DePuy Spine for the distribution of ScoliScore. In 2012, the company's ScoliScore assets were acquired by Transgenomic, which integrated the technology into its personalized medicine and molecular diagnostics portfolio.
