Axxima Pharmaceuticals was a Munich-based biotechnology company specializing in the development of small molecule drugs that target signal transduction pathways to treat infectious diseases. The company's research focused on identifying and inhibiting host-cell kinases that are essential for viral replication, particularly in HIV and Hepatitis C. By targeting host factors rather than viral proteins, Axxima aimed to create therapies with a higher barrier to resistance. Their lead program, a CDK9 inhibitor, was developed to block the transcription of the HIV genome. In March 2005, the company was acquired by GPC Biotech in an all-stock transaction valued at approximately $25 million. The acquisition integrated Axxima's kinase expertise and infectious disease pipeline into GPC Biotech's broader drug discovery efforts.
