Bacterial Barcodes was a molecular biotechnology company that developed the DiversiLab system, an automated rapid strain typing platform. Utilizing rep-PCR (repetitive sequence-based PCR) technology, the system provided standardized and reproducible DNA fingerprinting for the identification and characterization of bacterial and fungal isolates. The company's solutions were primarily used for tracking hospital-acquired infections and ensuring environmental and product safety in the food, pharmaceutical, and medical industries. Founded in 1999 as a spin-off from Baylor College of Medicine, the company was headquartered in Houston, Texas, and its technology was notably used by NASA to monitor microbial diversity on the International Space Station. Bacterial Barcodes was acquired by bioMérieux in 2006 to enhance its molecular biology and infectious disease portfolio.
