BALCO

The Bay Area Laboratory Co-operative (BALCO) was a sports nutrition center and laboratory that became the epicenter of one of the largest doping scandals in professional sports history. Founded by Victor Conte in 1984, the company initially provided blood and urine analysis and marketed nutritional supplements. However, it gained notoriety for developing and distributing undetectable performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) to high-profile athletes, including the designer steroid tetrahydrogestrinone (THG), known as "The Clear." The company's operations were effectively ended following a federal investigation in the early 2000s that exposed widespread use of banned substances in baseball, track and field, and football. BALCO's legacy remains a pivotal chapter in the evolution of anti-doping regulations and sports pharmacology.
