Baltimore Rh Typing Laboratory

The Baltimore Rh Typing Laboratory was a pioneering non-profit medical institution founded in 1945 by Dr. Milton S. Sacks in Baltimore, Maryland. It was established as one of the first specialized facilities in the United States dedicated to the study of the Rh factor and the clinical management of hemolytic disease of the newborn (HDN). The laboratory provided essential diagnostic services, including prenatal blood typing and antibody titration, and was a major producer of standardized Rh typing reagents. Its extensive clinical research and data collection were instrumental in the development of Rh immune globulin (RhoGAM), which revolutionized neonatal care by preventing Rh sensitization. Although it is no longer active, the laboratory remains a significant entity in the history of hematology and transfusion medicine.
