BCG Vaccine Laboratory

BCG Vaccine Laboratory (BCGVL) is a specialized manufacturing institution under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. Established in 1948 and located in Chennai, the laboratory is primarily responsible for the production of the Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) vaccine used in the Universal Immunization Programme. It produces freeze-dried BCG vaccines for the prevention of tuberculosis in infants and children. Additionally, the facility manufactures BCG Therapeutic, which is utilized as an immunotherapy for the treatment of superficial bladder cancer. BCGVL plays a critical role in public health by ensuring a steady supply of these essential biologicals for both domestic and international requirements.
