Company intelligence / Profile preview
Beecham Group was a prominent British pharmaceutical and consumer goods company, best known for its pioneering work in the development of antibiotics. Founded in 1848 by Thomas Beecham, the company transitioned from producing proprietary medicines like Beecham's Pills to becoming a research-driven pharmaceutical powerhouse in the 20th century. A landmark achievement was the 1957 discovery of the penicillin nucleus, 6-aminopenicillanic acid (6-APA), which led to the development of several semi-synthetic penicillins, including amoxicillin and ampicillin. In 1989, the company merged with SmithKline Beckman to form SmithKline Beecham, which subsequently merged with Glaxo Wellcome in 2000 to form GSK.
