Beecham Research Laboratories

Beecham Research Laboratories was the pharmaceutical research division of the Beecham Group, a British company that transitioned from consumer products to a global leader in antibiotics. The laboratories are world-renowned for the 1957 discovery of 6-aminopenicillanic acid (6-APA), the fundamental building block of the penicillin molecule. This breakthrough enabled the development of the first semi-synthetic penicillins, which overcame the limitations of natural penicillin, such as narrow spectrum and susceptibility to stomach acid. Key commercial successes originating from these labs include ampicillin (Penbritin), amoxicillin (Amoxil), and the beta-lactamase inhibitor clavulanic acid. The combination of amoxicillin and clavulanic acid resulted in Augmentin, one of the most successful antibiotics in medical history. In 1989, the Beecham Group merged with SmithKline Beckman to form SmithKline Beecham, which later merged with Glaxo Wellcome in 2000 to become GSK.
