Benger Laboratories

Benger Laboratories was a pioneering British pharmaceutical company based in Holmes Chapel, Cheshire, specializing in hematology and respiratory medicine. The company is most famous for developing Imferon (iron dextran), the first safe and effective intramuscular iron injection for treating iron deficiency anemia. It also played a critical role in the discovery of sodium cromoglicate (Intal), a breakthrough mast cell stabilizer that revolutionized the treatment of asthma. Originally established as Benger's Food Ltd, the firm was acquired by Fisons in 1947 and later became part of the Sanofi group. The research conducted at Benger Laboratories, particularly by scientist Roger Altounyan, remains a landmark in the history of inhalation therapy. Today, the company's former site continues to serve as a major manufacturing hub for global pharmaceutical production.
