Bexel Pharmaceuticals was a California-based biotechnology company dedicated to developing innovative treatments for metabolic disorders, with a primary focus on type 2 diabetes. The company's flagship program was BLX-1002, a novel, orally active small molecule insulin sensitizer that aimed to provide glycemic control without the weight gain and edema associated with existing thiazolidinedione therapies. Bexel's research focused on identifying compounds that could modulate insulin signaling pathways more safely and effectively. In early 2005, the company was acquired by the Indian pharmaceutical giant Torrent Pharmaceuticals for approximately $10.2 million.
