BFGoodrich, historically known as The B.F. Goodrich Company, was a major American industrial conglomerate that played a foundational role in the life sciences sector through its specialty chemicals division. The company is most notably responsible for the invention and commercialization of Carbopol (carbomer) polymers, which became industry-standard pharmaceutical excipients used for thickening, emulsifying, and controlling the release of active ingredients. Additionally, BFGoodrich developed high-performance medical polymers such as Estane thermoplastic polyurethane, which is used extensively in the manufacturing of medical devices like catheters and wound dressings. In 2001, the company divested its performance materials business (now part of Lubrizol Life Science) and rebranded as Goodrich Corporation to focus on aerospace before being acquired by United Technologies in 2012. While the BFGoodrich brand name survives today primarily in the tire industry under Michelin, its corporate legacy in pharmaceutical formulation and medical materials remains highly significant.
