BHC Ibuprofen

BHC Company was a landmark joint venture between the Boots Company and Hoechst Celanese Corporation, established in the mid-1980s to innovate the industrial synthesis of ibuprofen. The company is renowned for developing the "BHC Ibuprofen Process," a three-step catalytic method that revolutionized bulk pharmaceutical manufacturing by significantly improving atom economy and reducing environmental waste. This "green chemistry" breakthrough was commercialized in 1992 at the company's facility in Bishop, Texas, and received the inaugural Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award in 1997. The process replaced the traditional six-step Boots method, doubling the atom efficiency and virtually eliminating hazardous waste byproducts. The BHC ibuprofen business was eventually acquired by BASF Corporation, which continues to operate the Bishop plant as one of the world's largest ibuprofen production sites.
