Founded in 1980 and based in Lincolnshire, Illinois, the company provided high-resolution 3D imaging solutions used for non-destructive testing of aerospace components and specialized medical research. BIR's technology was particularly noted for its ability to image complex internal structures with high precision, serving clients such as NASA and the U.S. Department of Defense. In May 2007, the company was acquired by Varian Medical Systems for approximately $20 million to enhance Varian's X-ray and security imaging business units.
