Bio-Medicus

Bio-Medicus was a Minnesota-based medical device company focused on blood pumps, perfusion systems, cannulae, and related cardiovascular support technologies used during open-heart surgery and extracorporeal circulation. The company developed and commercialized devices for cardiopulmonary bypass and longer-term extracorporeal life support, including products that later continued under the Medtronic Bio-Medicus brand. Bio-Medicus was acquired by Medtronic in September 1990 and subsequently operated as Medtronic Bio-Medicus, Inc. Its legacy product line remains visible in Medtronic's cardiovascular portfolio through Bio-Medicus-branded cannulae and life-support catheters. The business is best characterized as a historical medtech/device company rather than a drug-development biotech company.
