Biocompatibles International was a prominent medical technology company specializing in interventional oncology and biocompatible materials. The company developed the proprietary PC Technology, a synthetic coating that mimics the molecular structure of red blood cell membranes to improve the biocompatibility of medical devices. Its core commercial success was driven by its drug-eluting bead technology, specifically the DC Bead, which is used by interventional radiologists to treat liver cancer through chemoembolization. The company also commercialized Bead Block for the embolization of hypervascular tumors and uterine fibroids. In 2011, Biocompatibles was acquired by BTG plc, which was subsequently acquired by Boston Scientific in 2019.
