Biofa (now Sicor Biotech, a part of Teva) was a pioneering biotechnology company based in Vilnius, Lithuania, and a leader in the development of recombinant proteins in Eastern Europe. Founded in 1989, the company was among the first globally to successfully produce and commercialize biosimilar versions of complex biologics, including recombinant human growth hormone and filgrastim. Its expertise in recombinant DNA technology and large-scale protein purification made it a highly attractive target for international acquisition. In 2001, Biofa was acquired by Sicor Inc., which was subsequently purchased by Teva Pharmaceutical Industries in 2004. Today, the former Biofa facility serves as a critical global center for Teva’s biopharmaceutical research, development, and manufacturing operations. The company's legacy is defined by its role in establishing Lithuania as a significant hub for the global life sciences industry.
