BioMedical Tissue Services (BTS) was a human tissue recovery company based in Fort Lee, New Jersey, that operated in the early 2000s. The company became notorious for a massive criminal scandal involving the illegal harvesting of bones, skin, and tendons from over 1,000 cadavers without family consent. These tissues were processed and sold to major medical device companies, eventually being used in thousands of surgical procedures worldwide, including dental implants and orthopedic repairs. The company was shut down in 2005 following a multi-agency investigation that revealed widespread forgery of consent forms and falsification of donor medical records. The scandal led to significant changes in the regulation and oversight of the tissue banking industry in the United States.
