Biomia is an early-stage synthetic biology company dedicated to the sustainable production of plant-derived medicinal compounds using engineered yeast strains. The company’s proprietary platform leverages metabolic engineering and fermentation to synthesize complex alkaloids, with a primary focus on mitragynine and other kratom-derived molecules. By bypassing traditional agricultural extraction, Biomia provides a scalable, pure, and environmentally friendly source of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs). Their research focuses on applications in pain management and opioid use disorder, aiming to develop safer alternatives to traditional opioids. The company is a spin-off from research conducted at Middlebury College and the University of Pennsylvania.
