Bionaut Pharmaceuticals was a biotechnology company based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, that specialized in the discovery and development of a novel class of therapeutics it called "Bionauts." These were engineered proteins designed to act as "smart" drugs by performing specific therapeutic functions within the body, such as sensing and responding to cellular signals. The company's research primarily focused on the p53 pathway, a critical regulator of cell growth and death, with applications in oncology and inflammatory diseases. Bionaut established a significant research collaboration with AstraZeneca in 2004 to develop p53-targeted cancer therapies but ultimately ceased operations in the late 2000s.
