Biopheresis Technologies was a clinical-stage biotechnology company that developed a proprietary extracorporeal blood filtration system designed to treat cancer. The company's lead technology, the Biopheresis System, utilized selective apheresis to remove soluble tumor necrosis factor receptors (sTNFRs) from the circulation of patients with advanced solid tumors. These soluble receptors act as decoys that neutralize the body's natural anti-tumor immune response; by removing them, the technology aimed to enhance the effectiveness of endogenous TNF-alpha. The system functioned similarly to a dialysis machine, passing blood over a matrix containing antibodies or ligands specific to the target receptors. Although the company reached Phase 2 clinical trials for indications such as metastatic breast cancer, it is no longer active in the industry. Its research contributed significantly to the early understanding of immune evasion mechanisms in oncology.
