Blue Heron Pharmaceuticals

Blue Heron Pharmaceuticals was a development-stage biopharmaceutical company focused on the advancement of oral iron chelation therapies for patients with chronic iron overload. The company was established in 2005 to develop deferitrin (GT56-252), a compound originally licensed from Genzyme Corporation. Deferitrin was designed to treat iron overload resulting from frequent blood transfusions in patients with conditions such as beta-thalassemia and sickle cell disease, offering a more convenient oral alternative to existing parenteral therapies. In July 2008, Genzyme re-acquired Blue Heron Pharmaceuticals to bring the program back in-house and integrate it into its hematology portfolio. Although the candidate reached Phase 2 clinical trials, its development was eventually halted due to safety concerns related to renal toxicity.
