Company intelligence / Profile preview
AB Bofors Nobel-Pharma was a Swedish pharmaceutical company established in 1967 as a spin-off of the civil chemical division of the defense and industrial group AB Bofors. Based in Mölndal, Sweden, the company was highly successful in research and development, notably developing the widely used local anesthetics mepivacaine (Carbocain) and bupivacaine (Marcain). In the 1970s, Bofors Nobel-Pharma collaborated with Astra AB, which eventually acquired its patent portfolio, including the research project that led to the blockbuster corticosteroid budesonide (Pulmicort). The company's pharmaceutical operations were wound down in 1973, and its research team dispersed to other pharmaceutical firms.
