Founded in 1958 by Donald McLaren, the company grew to become a dominant player in the Australasian market, providing a wide array of products for both livestock and companion animals. Its portfolio included innovative treatments for mastitis, internal and external parasites, and various metabolic disorders. In 2010, the company was acquired by Bayer AG to bolster its animal health division's presence in the Pacific region and leverage Bomac's manufacturing capabilities. Following Bayer's divestment of its animal health business in 2020, Bomac's legacy products and operations were integrated into Elanco Animal Health.
