Company intelligence / Profile preview
Boots Pharmaceuticals was the research and drug development arm of the British health and beauty retailer Boots. The company is globally recognized for the discovery of ibuprofen in the 1960s, a breakthrough that provided a safer alternative to aspirin for treating pain and inflammation. Throughout the 20th century, the division developed a robust portfolio of prescription medicines across therapeutic areas such as endocrinology, cardiology, and rheumatology. One of its major assets was the thyroid hormone replacement therapy Synthroid, which it acquired through the purchase of Flint Laboratories. In 1995, Boots divested the pharmaceutical division to the German chemical giant BASF for approximately $1.4 billion. This sale marked the end of Boots' tenure as a primary drug manufacturer, allowing the parent company to focus on its retail pharmacy business.
