Company intelligence / Profile preview
BTP, originally known as British Tar Products, was a prominent UK-based specialty and fine chemicals company that became a vital supplier to the global pharmaceutical and agrochemical industries. The company transitioned from its origins in coal tar distillation to focus on high-value fine chemicals, active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), and biocides. Operating through specialized subsidiaries like Nipa Laboratories and Archimica, BTP established itself as a leading contract manufacturing organization (CMO) for major life science firms. At its peak, the company was a member of the FTSE 250 index on the London Stock Exchange. In 2000, BTP was acquired by the Swiss specialty chemicals giant Clariant for approximately $1.8 billion to form the core of Clariant's fine chemicals division.
