BTHC VI, Inc. was a shell company that completed a reverse merger with Athersys, Inc. in 2007, subsequently adopting the Athersys name. Athersys became a prominent biotechnology company focused on regenerative medicine, specifically developing its proprietary MultiStem (invimestrocel) cell therapy platform for critical care indications. MultiStem is an allogeneic, 'off-the-shelf' stem cell product designed to promote tissue repair and modulate the immune system in conditions such as ischemic stroke and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Despite reaching Phase 3 clinical trials, the company faced significant clinical setbacks and financial instability, leading to a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in January 2024. In April 2024, Healios K.K. acquired substantially all of Athersys' assets and intellectual property, effectively ending the company's independent operations.
