Cala Medical is an Irish biotechnology company focused on developing novel therapies for sepsis and autoimmune diseases. Spun out of the University of Limerick in 2017, the company utilizes a proprietary platform of therapeutic enzymes, specifically targeting the complement component C5a. Their lead technology, Cytoflow5, is a medical device/system designed to remove C5a from the circulation of patients with sepsis to modulate the immune response. The company's enzyme-based approach, featuring the recombinant protease ScpA, is also being explored for systemic and local treatment of inflammatory conditions like psoriasis and rheumatoid arthritis. Cala Medical's technology was later partnered with or acquired by Amryt Pharma (now part of Chiesi Farmaceutici).
