Calco Chemical Company

Calco Chemical Company was a prominent American chemical and pharmaceutical manufacturer founded in 1915 and based in Bound Brook, New Jersey. Originally established to produce dyes and intermediates to reduce U.S. dependence on German imports during World War I, the company eventually became a major player in the pharmaceutical industry. It was a leading producer of sulfonamide "sulfa" drugs, such as sulfadiazine, which were critical anti-infectives used extensively during World War II. In 1929, Calco was acquired by American Cyanamid and operated as its Calco Chemical Division for several decades. The company is historically significant for its contributions to organic chemistry and the mass production of early antibiotics, though its former manufacturing site later became a major environmental Superfund project.
