Overview
The California Network of Mental Health Clients (CNMHC) was a prominent statewide, consumer-run non-profit organization dedicated to advocating for the rights and empowerment of individuals receiving mental health services in California. Founded in 1984, the organization operated on the principle of peer support and the belief that mental health policy should be shaped by those with lived experience. CNMHC provided training, public policy advocacy, and civil rights protection for mental health "clients" across the state. It played a critical role in the implementation of the Mental Health Services Act (MHSA) in California. However, the organization ceased major operations around 2011 after losing its primary funding contract with the California Department of Mental Health.
