Calydon

Calydon was a biotechnology company focused on developing oncolytic virus therapies for the treatment of solid tumors, with a primary emphasis on prostate cancer. The company developed a proprietary platform of conditionally replicative adenoviruses (CRAds) designed to selectively target and eliminate cancer cells while sparing healthy tissue. Its lead candidates, CV706 and CV787, utilized prostate-specific promoters to drive viral replication specifically within prostate tumor cells. These programs demonstrated the potential of using viral vectors as targeted therapeutics that amplify their effect within the tumor microenvironment. In 2001, Calydon was acquired by Cell Genesys, which integrated Calydon's oncolytic virus technology into its broader gene therapy and cancer vaccine portfolio. The acquisition represented a significant consolidation in the early gene therapy sector and highlighted the emerging interest in tissue-specific viral replication.
