Calypso Medical Technologies is a medical device company that developed the Calypso System, a real-time tracking technology for radiation therapy often referred to as "GPS for the Body." The system uses implanted electromagnetic transponders to provide continuous, objective information on the location of a tumor during radiation treatment. This precision allows for tighter treatment margins, enabling clinicians to deliver higher doses of radiation to the target while sparing surrounding healthy tissue. Primarily utilized for prostate cancer, the technology was later expanded to include applications for lung cancer. The company was acquired by Varian Medical Systems in 2011 to bolster their image-guided radiation therapy portfolio.
