Overview
Cambridge Neuroscience (Cambridge NeuroScience Inc.) was a biotechnology company based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, focused on the development of therapeutics for central nervous system (CNS) disorders. Founded in 1986, the company became a pioneer in NMDA receptor antagonist research, aiming to treat acute brain injury and chronic neurodegeneration. Its lead clinical candidate, Cerestat (aptiganel), was evaluated in Phase 3 trials for stroke and traumatic brain injury in collaboration with Boehringer Ingelheim, though it ultimately failed to meet its primary endpoints. The company's pipeline also included CNS 5161, a small molecule for neuropathic pain, and Glial Growth Factor 2 (GGF2), a neuregulin protein licensed for the treatment of multiple sclerosis. Cambridge Neuroscience was acquired by the UK-based CeNeS Pharmaceuticals in 2000.
