Canadian Medical Discovery Fund

The Canadian Medical Discovery Fund (CMDF) was a prominent Canadian labor-sponsored venture capital corporation (LSVCC) that specialized in the life sciences and healthcare sectors. Established in 1994 and managed by MDS Capital Corp (now Lumira Ventures), the fund was designed to bridge the gap between medical research and commercialization in Canada. It provided critical early-stage and growth capital to a wide array of biotechnology, medical device, and pharmaceutical companies. CMDF's portfolio included successful Canadian entities such as ID Biomedical and Angiotech Pharmaceuticals. In 2005, following a period of consolidation in the LSVCC industry, the fund was merged into the GrowthWorks Canadian Fund. This merger integrated its assets into one of the largest venture capital pools in the country at the time.
