Cancer Research, Training and Prevention Institute

The Cancer Research, Training and Prevention Institute (CRTPI) is a specialized research and community outreach organization based at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. Founded in 1994 by Dr. Elmer Huerta, the institute is dedicated to reducing cancer health disparities, particularly within the Hispanic and Latino populations in the United States. CRTPI operates the "Prevención" program, which provides culturally and linguistically appropriate cancer screening, education, and patient navigation services. The institute's work focuses on the early detection of common malignancies, including breast, cervical, colorectal, and prostate cancers. In addition to clinical outreach, CRTPI conducts public health research and offers training programs for healthcare professionals to improve the delivery of preventive care. The organization serves as a national model for community-based cancer prevention and has been instrumental in increasing screening rates among underserved communities.
