Established in 1985 by oncologist Dr. Maurice Slevin, it became one of Europe's leading cancer information services, offering expert-led advice through a national helpline and a vast library of patient-focused publications. The organization focused on empowering patients with clear, accurate information about diagnoses, treatments, and living with cancer. In 2008, Cancerbackup merged with Macmillan Cancer Support, integrating its extensive information resources into Macmillan's broader support network. This merger aimed to provide a more seamless and comprehensive service for cancer patients across the United Kingdom.
