Overview

Cardiopulmonics was a medical device company based in Salt Lake City, Utah, founded in 1984 by Dr. J.D. Mortensen. The company was dedicated to the development of the Intravascular Oxygenator (IVOX), a novel device intended to provide respiratory support for patients with acute respiratory failure or adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). The IVOX technology utilized a bundle of hollow fiber membranes placed within the vena cava to facilitate gas exchange directly in the bloodstream, thereby reducing the reliance on mechanical ventilation and minimizing lung trauma. Although the device reached Phase 3 clinical trials and the company went public in 1992, technical limitations and strategic shifts led to the company's dissolution in 1994, with its assets and focus transitioning to InnerDyne.
