Cascan

Cascan was a prominent German pharmaceutical company based in Wiesbaden, originally established in 1977 as a joint venture between Merck KGaA and Beecham (later SmithKline Beecham). The company specialized in the development and marketing of gastrointestinal and respiratory therapeutics, achieving significant market share in Germany with leading antacid brands such as Talcid and Riopan. In 1999, Merck KGaA acquired the remaining 50% stake in Cascan from SmithKline Beecham for approximately 565 million DM to consolidate its consumer health and laboratory business. Following the acquisition, Cascan's operations and extensive product portfolio were fully integrated into Merck KGaA's pharmaceutical division. The company was well-regarded for its strong sales force and established presence in the European over-the-counter and prescription medicine markets.
