Company intelligence / Profile preview
Catalytica Pharmaceuticals was a leading pharmaceutical contract manufacturing organization (CMO) that specialized in the development and commercial-scale production of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs). The company was a pioneer in applying advanced catalytic technologies to streamline the chemical synthesis of complex drug molecules, reducing waste and production costs. In 1997, Catalytica significantly expanded its operations by acquiring a massive manufacturing facility in Greenville, North Carolina, from Glaxo Wellcome in a landmark outsourcing deal. This acquisition transformed the company into one of the largest independent providers of pharmaceutical manufacturing services globally. In 2000, Catalytica Pharmaceuticals was acquired by the Dutch life sciences company DSM for approximately $750 million. The Greenville facility remains a critical hub in the global pharmaceutical supply chain, currently operating under the ownership of Thermo Fisher Scientific.
