CBay Systems was a leading provider of medical transcription and healthcare business process outsourcing (BPO) services. Founded in 1998, the company utilized a global workforce and advanced technology to convert medical dictation into structured clinical documentation. The company became a major player in the healthcare IT space through strategic acquisitions, most notably the purchase of MedQuist in 2011. Following this merger, the company rebranded as MModal to emphasize its focus on speech understanding and natural language processing technologies. Its platform, MModal Fluency, integrated directly with electronic health records to improve physician productivity and data accuracy. In 2019, 3M acquired M*Modal's technology business for approximately $1 billion to bolster its health information systems division.
