Company intelligence / Profile preview
Celera Corporation is a pioneering biotechnology company best known for its historic role in sequencing the human genome. Founded in 1998 as a division of Applera Corporation, the company utilized advanced shotgun sequencing and massive computing power to map the human genetic code, famously competing with the publicly funded Human Genome Project. Following this achievement, Celera transitioned from a genomic information provider to a healthcare company focused on personalized medicine and molecular diagnostics. The company developed and commercialized a range of diagnostic products, including tests for cardiovascular disease risk and infectious disease management. In 2011, Celera was acquired by Quest Diagnostics for approximately $344 million, integrating its genetic testing assets and the Berkeley HeartLab business into Quest's diagnostic portfolio.
