Celltech

Celltech Group was a pioneering British biotechnology company that played a foundational role in the development of antibody-based therapeutics. Founded in 1980 with support from the UK government, the company became a leader in antibody humanization and PEGylation technologies, which are essential for reducing the immunogenicity of biologic drugs. Through strategic mergers with Chiroscience, Medeva, and Oxford GlycoSciences, Celltech established a diverse portfolio spanning immunology, oncology, and bone health. Its research led to the development of blockbuster treatments such as Cimzia and the first antibody-drug conjugate, Mylotarg. In 2004, Celltech was acquired by the Belgian pharmaceutical company UCB for approximately $2.9 billion, serving as the cornerstone for UCB's transition into a global biologics leader.
