Celunol

Celunol was a pioneering industrial biotechnology company focused on the development and commercialization of cellulosic ethanol from non-food biomass. Originally founded as BC International, the company utilized proprietary recombinant microorganisms and enzymatic processes to convert agricultural residues and wood waste into renewable fuel. In 2007, Celunol merged with Diversa Corporation to form Verenium Corporation, creating a vertically integrated leader in the biofuels sector. The company's technology was notably demonstrated at a commercial-scale facility in Jennings, Louisiana, which was the first of its kind in the United States. Following the merger, the combined entity's assets were eventually acquired by BASF in 2013, integrating Celunol's innovations into a global industrial biosolutions portfolio.
