Censa Pharmaceuticals was a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company dedicated to developing innovative therapies for rare metabolic conditions. The company's primary focus was the development of CNSA-001 (sepiapterin), an oral small molecule designed to treat Phenylketonuria (PKU) and other diseases associated with tetrahydrobiopterin (BH4) deficiency. CNSA-001 acts as a precursor to BH4, a necessary cofactor for the enzyme phenylalanine hydroxylase, which breaks down the amino acid phenylalanine. By restoring enzyme activity, the therapy aims to lower toxic phenylalanine levels in the blood. In May 2020, Censa was acquired by PTC Therapeutics for an upfront payment of $10 million plus significant milestone-based considerations. Following the acquisition, the lead asset was integrated into PTC's pipeline and has since advanced into late-stage clinical development.
