Centralab was a pioneering provider of central laboratory services for the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, specializing in standardized laboratory testing for global clinical trials. The company played a crucial role in the evolution of the Contract Research Organization (CRO) sector by ensuring data consistency across multiple international study sites, a requirement that became essential for large-scale drug development programs. Acquired by Corning in 1991, Centralab was eventually integrated into Covance, which was spun off as an independent company in 1997. Today, its legacy and foundational methodologies form a significant part of Labcorp's global central laboratory network, following Labcorp's acquisition of Covance in 2015. The company is recognized for establishing the industry standard for centralized diagnostic data management in clinical research.
