Company intelligence / Profile preview
Chemdex was a pioneering B2B e-commerce company that provided an online marketplace specifically designed for the life sciences industry. Founded in 1997, it served as a centralized procurement platform connecting researchers at biotech and pharmaceutical companies with thousands of suppliers of chemical and biological reagents. The company aimed to reduce the inefficiencies of paper-based ordering by providing a digital catalog and automated purchasing workflows. After a successful IPO in 1999, the company rebranded as Ventro Corporation to apply its marketplace model to other sectors. However, it faced significant challenges during the dot-com downturn and was eventually acquired by NexPrise in 2002.
