Chiron Corporation was a pioneering American biotechnology firm with commercialized drugs in oncology and neurology, leading vaccines for influenza and pediatric/adult diseases, as well as globally adopted blood screening tests. It developed the first genetically engineered hepatitis B vaccine, co-discovered the hepatitis C virus genome enabling new diagnostics, launched Proleukin for metastatic cancers, Betaseron for multiple sclerosis, Regranex for diabetic ulcers with J&J partnership, Tobi inhaled antibiotic for cystic fibrosis patients, Fluad adjuvanted flu vaccine after acquiring European businesses to become one of the world's largest flu vaccine suppliers. Its nucleic acid testing systems revolutionized blood safety worldwide. The company was acquired by Novartis in April 2006.
